2025 in Review: HAZOP Leadership, Global Projects, and Process Safety Growth

As the year draws to a close, it’s a natural time for reflection, and 2025 has given me plenty to look back on. This year, I spent nearly seven months on the road delivering projects, running training sessions, and supporting clients through a wide range of business trips.

I had the pleasure of acting as a HAZOP Leader on the following projects:
• HAZOPs with LOPA for the Carbon Black Project site, Orion S.A.
• HAZOP for a cathode manufacturing site in Konin, PROCHEM
• HAZOPs for the OSBL scope in Płock for the “Nowa Chemia” olefin project, Aldesa
• HAZOP and dSIL for a heat and power plant in Częstochowa, Bilfinger Engineering
• HAZOP for an LCO₂ recovery project in Goświnowice, PROCHEM
• HAZOP for an organic peroxides production facility, Oxytop

But this year was about more than just the volume of work.
In August, I began collaborating with Integrity Engineering Aleksander Czechowicz, who supported me on most projects as a scribe. His contribution made a real difference to both the pace and quality of delivery.

In September, we visited the POWTECH TECHNOPHARM trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany, where we met a wide range of suppliers providing equipment and technologies for the processing and handling of powdered materials.

At the turn of October and November, work took us to China. We visited Changsha, Wuhan, and Shanghai, while also strengthening relationships with friends and potential partners, including JS Energy (Ningbo Ronbay New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.) and Hanruipuzer Bulk Handling Technology(Shanghai)Co.,Ltd.

In December, I attended the Process Hazard and Risk Analysis (PH&RA) training in Dubai, delivered as part of the TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Programme by Risktec (TÜV Rheinland), led by João Abruzzini and Mark Skelton. The course provided a structured, practice focused refresher of process safety management and risk identification methods, covering What If, HAZID, HAZOP, and FMEA, as well as risk matrices, Bowtie analysis, Fault Tree and Event Tree analysis, Physical Effects Modelling, and the link between LOPA, SIL assessment, and ALARP based decision making. It was also a valuable reminder of the alignment with key international standards, including IEC 61882 for HAZOP and IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 for functional safety.

Also in December, we took part in the European Conference on Plant & Process Safety organized by the European Process Safety Centre (EPSC) in Aachen, Germany. Many thanks to Tijs Koerts for organizing such a strong event and creating a great space for knowledge sharing and networking. It was also a real pleasure to reconnect with familiar faces and to exchange experiences and perspectives once again.

Thank you to everyone I had the chance to work with in 2025. Here’s to an even stronger 2026.
