We carried out a HAZOP and LOPA study for a project implemented at a facility operating in the edible oils and fats industry.
The project involved a waste heat recovery system designed to recover heat from boiler flue gases and use it for preheating boiler feedwater. The solution was intended to improve the energy efficiency of the boiler house and reduce fuel consumption.
As part of the study, we identified process hazards associated with the operation of the system, reviewed potential accident scenarios and assessed the effectiveness of the existing safeguards.
For selected scenarios, we also performed a LOPA study to determine the required level of risk reduction and evaluate whether additional protection layers were necessary.
The study resulted in a set of recommendations supporting the safe commissioning and operation of the waste heat recovery system.
